If you’ve ever scrolled through fitness content on Instagram or TikTok, you’ve likely seen clips of people moving slowly on a sleek, spring-loaded machine, muscles trembling, sweat dripping. The hashtags might say #Lagree or #Solidcore—but are they the same thing? Not quite.

It’s understandable why people often confuse the two. Both are low-impact, high-intensity workouts performed on reformer-style machines. Both torch your core and leave you sore in the best way. But here’s the truth: Solidcore and Lagree are not interchangeable. While they may share some similarities, they’re two completely separate methods.

Let’s break it down and clear up all the confusion.

What Is Solidcore?

Solidcore was founded in 2013 by Anne Mahlum in Washington, D.C., after she experienced a high-intensity Pilates class in Los Angeles. Inspired by the transformative effects, she created her own method that quickly gained popularity.

Solidcore classes are typically 50-minute, full-body strength-training sessions that utilize slow, controlled movements to break down slow-twitch muscle fibers, allowing them to rebuild stronger. They offer other 30 minute classes that are focused on core, as well as beginner to advanced classes.

Solidcore’s reformer is color customized. This includes springs that are white, gray, black, and blue as well as black and gray cables. The machine has a designated black and gray side. On the gray side, the springs work against you, while on the black side the springs work in your favor. The Solidcore reformer doesn’t include padded handle bars on either side. 

While Solidcore shares similarities with Lagree—such as utilizing a resistance-based machine and emphasizing slow, deliberate movements—its intention and programming are rooted in the principles of strength training.

So, Is Solidcore Lagree? The Short Answer: Nope.

Let’s cut straight to the point—Solidcore is not Lagree. While both are high-intensity, low-impact workouts, they are distinct methods with different origins, equipment, and philosophies. 

Solidcore was originally inspired by the Lagree Method but has since developed its own unique approach and branding. It is not affiliated with Lagree Fitness in any way. Also, Solidcore does not use the Megaformer, which is unique to the Lagree Method and designed by the founder himself, Sebastien Lagree.

At Pilates Plus, we are a Lagree-certified studio and employ instructors who have completed a formal certification process through Lagree Fitness. You can rest assured you are safe and in good hands with our certified instructors. They’re trained in specific methodologies and techniques developed by Sebastien Lagree, focusing on precise, controlled movements and proper form. 

Solidcore, while a Lagree-inspired method, operates independently and does not require its coaches to undergo Lagree certification. A Solidcore workout uses its own terminology and the instructional approach can vary between Solidcore locations. 

Solidcore vs. Lagree: Breaking It Down

Lagree Fitness offers a certification program that allows participants to become Lagree certified through teacher-training. This program provides each instructor the ability to teach the patented method on Lagree equipment. The unique certification process is specific to the Lagree Method.

Solidcore does not require its instructors to be Lagree-certified, as it operates independently with its own training protocols.

As mentioned before, the equipment used in Solidcore vs. Lagree differs. Lagree workouts are performed on the Megaformer, a machine designed by Sebastien Lagree himself. 

Solidcore uses its own custom-built machines, which are a version of the reformer. While similar in appearance to the Megaformer, Solidcore reformers are tailored to the specific movements and intensity levels of the Solidcore workout as well as its brand colors

Time under tension and slow-controlled movements are key characteristics of both Lagree and Soldicore. However, Solidcore has more of an upbeat, fast-paced feel with an intense party-like vibe. 

Lagree’s environment is energizing, but still allows you to simultaneously focus on the mind-body connection
